GalaxEye Acquires StarOps to Build In-House Satellite Engineering

The Indian spacetech startup is vertically integrating to accelerate the deployment of its OptoSAR constellation.

Indian space technology startup GalaxEye has acquired StarOps, a Bengaluru-based spacecraft engineering firm, to bring satellite bus development in-house. The move transforms GalaxEye from a payload-focused entity into a full-stack space systems company.

Through the acquisition, GalaxEye gains access to qualified satellite bus platforms across three distinct weight classes: 50 kg, 150 kg, and 250 kg. StarOps, incorporated in 2022, traces its professional origins back to TeamIndus, a pioneering venture in India's private space sector. The firm has achieved more than 66% indigenization across its satellite systems.

Strategic Shift to Vertical Integration

GalaxEye specializes in OptoSAR technology, a hybrid approach that combines optical imaging with Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) for advanced Earth observation. Until now, the company's primary focus remained on the development of these sophisticated imaging payloads. By absorbing StarOps, GalaxEye can now design, engineer, and operate the entire spacecraft platform required to host its technology.

"From day one, our vision has been to build a company that develops and owns the technologies defining the future of space," said Suyash Singh, Co-founder and CEO of GalaxEye. Nirmal Suraj Gadde, Co-founder and Missions Lead at StarOps, noted that the experience gained at TeamIndus in building missions from first principles is now being integrated into GalaxEye's operations.

Industry Implications and Recovery

This acquisition represents a broader trend of vertical integration within the Indian spacetech ecosystem. By reducing reliance on external satellite bus providers and global supply chains, GalaxEye aims to lower mission costs and shorten development cycles. This control is critical for the precise integration of proprietary imaging payloads with the spacecraft chassis.

Furthermore, the acquisition is intended to strengthen GalaxEye's satellite engineering capabilities following a "Drishti setback," involving a loss of contact with a spacecraft. With the backing of Infosys, GalaxEye is positioning itself to recover from this technical hurdle by owning the engineering process from the ground up.

The Path Forward

GalaxEye's immediate objective is the deployment of a constellation of OptoSAR satellites for global Earth observation. The integration of StarOps' indigenous platforms is expected to accelerate the timeline for these launches. Industry observers will now be watching to see how quickly GalaxEye can transition its existing payload designs onto the newly acquired 50 kg to 250 kg bus architectures to resume its orbital ambitions.
