ICEYE Reaches €10 Billion Valuation Following €1 Billion Funding Round
The Finnish SAR satellite leader secures the first-ever investment from the European Commission's Scaleup Europe Fund to accelerate sovereign intelligence.
Finnish satellite intelligence firm ICEYE has raised more than €1 billion in a Series F funding round, propelling the company's valuation beyond €10 billion. The investment marks a pivotal shift in European space capabilities, securing the resources necessary to scale the production of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) technology for global government use.
The funding round was co-led by General Atlantic and the Scaleup Europe Fund, managed by EQT. This represents the first-ever investment made by the Scaleup Europe Fund. Of the total capital raised, €450 million consists of primary proceeds. The financial surge follows a strong fiscal performance; ICEYE reported crossing €250 million in revenue and exceeding €100 million in EBITDA in 2025. Additionally, the firm maintains a contracted backlog of more than €1.5 billion.
The Push for Sovereign Intelligence
Founded in 2014, ICEYE has built the world's largest constellation of SAR satellites. Unlike traditional optical satellites, SAR technology allows for high-resolution Earth observation regardless of cloud cover, weather, or light conditions. The company has pivoted toward a model of "sovereign intelligence," selling entire satellite systems directly to nations to ensure technological autonomy and national security. To date, seven European governments have procured these independent systems.
According to ICEYE Co-Founder and CEO Rafal Modrzewski, the window to build sovereign intelligence from space is open now, signaling a new era for the industry. This strategic approach allows governments to maintain their own intelligence streams without relying on third-party providers or foreign entities for critical surveillance data.
Strategic Implications for Europe
This investment is a strategic move by the European Commission to reduce reliance on non-European intelligence providers. By backing ICEYE through the Scaleup Europe Fund, the EU is treating space-based intelligence as a critical defense capability. The scale of the funding provides the industrial capacity required to meet this demand, with ICEYE aiming to double its satellite production to 100 units annually by 2028.
As modern defense increasingly relies on the integration of real-time visibility and trusted connectivity, the ability to mass-produce SAR satellites becomes a geopolitical asset. This expansion ensures that European allies can deploy rapid-response monitoring capabilities across diverse geographies.
Future Outlook
With the Series F capital, ICEYE is positioned to dominate the SAR market, but the primary focus remains on the aggressive ramp-up of its manufacturing pipeline. Observers will be watching whether other European nations follow the lead of the first seven adopters to procure full sovereign systems.
