Haleon and A*STAR Launch ISMOS Study on Midlife Asian Women's Metabolic Health

Haleon and the A*STAR Institute for Human Development and Potential (IHDP) have launched a clinical study to examine metabolic health in middle-aged Asian women. The initiative seeks to fill a critical gap in global nutrition research, where this specific demographic has historically been under-represented.

The study, titled "Impact of Supplementation in Improving Metabolic Health Outcomes" (ISMOS), focuses on the effects of multivitamin and mineral (MVM) supplementation on metabolic health. This collaboration follows a prior analysis of data from the Growing Up in Singapore Towards healthy Outcomes (GUSTO) study. That research indicated that midlife women with higher levels of vitamin D and B vitamins exhibited more favorable markers for blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar.

The Metabolic Challenge

The focus on midlife women is driven by the physiological shifts that occur during the menopausal transition. These changes are closely linked to the development of metabolic syndrome, which significantly increases the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. According to reports from the WHO, WEF, and McKinsey, women spend 25% more of their lives in poorer health than men, highlighting a systemic need for targeted preventive healthcare.

Regional health trends further underscore the urgency. The prevalence of metabolic health issues is rising across Asia, driven by aging populations and widespread micronutrient deficiencies. By focusing on the Asian population, the ISMOS study aims to move beyond generalized global data to find solutions tailored to the unique biological and environmental risks faced by women in the region.

Industry and Health Implications

For the healthcare industry, the study represents a shift toward evidence-based preventive aging. Keith Choy, President of Haleon Asia Pacific, stated that the collaboration is an important step in addressing the evolving health needs of midlife women and strengthening the role of Centrum in supporting healthy ageing.

If the study confirms that MVM supplementation can improve metabolic markers, it could lead to more practical, scalable preventive healthcare solutions. Such outcomes would potentially reduce the long-term burden of chronic diseases on regional healthcare systems and improve the overall quality of life for millions of women.

Next Steps

Professor Johan Eriksson, Executive Director of A*STAR IHDP, noted that the goal is to generate locally and regionally relevant evidence to better understand preventive health. The scientific community will be watching for the ISMOS results to see if the correlations found in the GUSTO study translate into causal improvements through supplementation. While the economic potential of women's health investment is often cited as a driver for such research, the primary focus remains on the clinical validation of these nutritional interventions.
