Space Force Awards SpaceX $4.16 Billion for Space-Based Target Tracking

The U.S. Space Force has awarded SpaceX a $4.16 billion contract to accelerate the deployment of the Space-Based Airborne Moving Target Indicator (SB-AMTI) program. This investment signals a strategic shift toward a more resilient, layered tracking architecture for national security missions.

As part of the broader Space Based Sensing & Targeting (SBST) portfolio, the SB-AMTI program is designed to detect and track airborne moving targets from orbit. The Space Force expects the initial satellite constellation for the program to be deployed by 2028. These space-based sensors are specifically designed to complement the Air Force’s E-7 Wedgetail airborne early warning and control aircraft, providing a persistent, global tracking system from space.

Shifting the ISR Architecture

This investment comes as the U.S. military pivots toward a more distributed Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) framework. Historically, the military has relied heavily on airborne platforms to track threats, but these assets are often limited by fuel endurance, crew fatigue, and vulnerability to enemy interception. By migrating sensing and targeting capabilities into space, the Space Force intends to reduce this reliance on vulnerable aircraft and increase the overall speed and accuracy of target detection.

Strategic Implications for Global Tracking

The integration of space-based sensing represents a move toward "responsive space" and high-frequency tracking. By supplementing the E-7 Wedgetail with a persistent orbital layer, the U.S. can maintain global surveillance without the geographic and endurance constraints inherent to manned aircraft. This layered approach ensures that if an airborne asset is compromised or unable to reach a specific region, the orbital constellation can maintain a continuous track on airborne threats, providing a more seamless operational picture for commanders.

The Path to 2028

With the 2028 deployment target, the focus now shifts to the rapid production and launch of the SB-AMTI hardware. The Space Force will monitor the integration of these space-based feeds into existing command-and-control systems to ensure the data from SpaceX's constellation can be utilized in real-time. While the primary contract has been awarded, the military continues to evaluate how this orbital layer will interact with other emerging sensing technologies within the SBST portfolio to create a fully redundant tracking network.
