Simultaneously, Intel Foundry and ASML confirmed a major production milestone on the Intel 18A node. Intel has now processed over one million wafers using High NA EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet) equipment, validating the scalability of its most advanced lithography process.

The Impact on AI Infrastructure

These developments arrive as the semiconductor industry pivots toward the commercial readiness of sub-2-nanometer chip designs. The shift toward custom silicon for cloud providers and the adoption of High NA EUV lithography are critical drivers for reducing operating costs and increasing efficiency in AI processor manufacturing.

Industry analysts note that the transition to 12-inch masks and the success of the 18A node are particularly consequential because they reduce the reliance on expensive "stitching" techniques used for large AI chips. By eliminating these complex workarounds, manufacturers can potentially lower the barrier to entry for next-generation AI infrastructure and significantly increase the total output of high-performance processors.

While the immediate market reaction was positive, long-term impact depends on the successful execution of the 2031 pilot lines and the continued yield stability of the 18A node. Investors are now watching to see if other cloud hyperscalers will follow the AWS-Qualcomm model of multi-generational co-design, which could further decouple AI hardware from off-the-shelf components and accelerate the cycle of custom silicon deployment.
