Doosan Pivots to AI Infrastructure with $3.6 Billion SK Siltron Acquisition
The heavy-industry conglomerate is transforming into a high-tech entity by securing a global leader in semiconductor silicon wafers.
Doosan Group is nearing the acquisition of SK Siltron, a global leader in semiconductor silicon wafer manufacturing, in a move that signals a fundamental shift in the conglomerate's corporate identity. The deal, estimated at approximately 5 trillion won ($3.6 billion), marks Doosan's aggressive transition from a traditional heavy-industry powerhouse into a high-tech entity focused on semiconductors and artificial intelligence.
To finance the massive transaction, Doosan entered into a Price Return Swap (PRS) agreement in December 2025. By selling 11.7 million shares of Doosan Robotics, the group secured approximately 947.7 billion won ($720 million) to fund the acquisition. SK Siltron, which competes globally with Japanese giants Shin-Etsu Chemical and Sumco, provides the essential silicon wafers that serve as the foundation for nearly all integrated circuits.
A Strategic Pivot from Heavy Industry
This acquisition is the centerpiece of a long-term restructuring strategy led by Chairman Park Jeong-won to reduce the group's historical dependence on heavy machinery and energy. By absorbing SK Siltron, Doosan is building a vertically integrated semiconductor value chain. This ecosystem combines raw materials via SK Siltron, backend testing through Doosan Tesna—which the group acquired in 2022 for 460 billion won—and automation via Doosan Robotics.
Simultaneously, the move aligns with SK Group's own portfolio rebalancing. SK is divesting the wafer business as part of a broader financial restructuring effort intended to optimize its investments in AI and battery technologies.
Securing the AI Bottleneck
The acquisition is critical because it allows Doosan to control a primary bottleneck in the AI chip ecosystem. As demand for AI accelerators and high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure surges, owning the upstream production of silicon wafers transforms Doosan from a machinery provider into a comprehensive technology partner.
