First-Ever General Strike at Leeno Industrial Threatens Global Chip Supply

Leeno Industrial, a linchpin in the semiconductor testing infrastructure, is currently paralyzed by its first general strike since its founding in 1974. The labor unrest threatens to disrupt the quality-control pipeline for the world's most advanced semiconductors.

The conflict escalated rapidly in July 2026, beginning as a partial strike on July 20 before evolving into an indefinite general strike on July 23. Despite negotiations held on July 30, labor and management failed to reach an agreement regarding performance bonuses. The dispute centers on the union's desire to stabilize the wage system by moving away from lump-sum bonuses paid in November—which can exceed half of an employee's annual salary—toward a fixed-basis payment structure.

Production at a Standstill

The operational impact is severe. Approximately 353 of the company's 730 employees—roughly 50% of the workforce—are participating in the walkout. This loss of manpower has resulted in an estimated daily financial hit of 2 billion Korean won for the Busan-based manufacturer.

Leeno Industrial occupies a dominant position in the Materials, Parts, and Equipment (MP&E) sector. The company specializes in the production of thin pins and test sockets. These components are essential tools used by chipmakers to filter out defective semiconductors before they are shipped to customers. Without these precision parts, the final verification of chip integrity becomes impossible.

Systemic Supply Chain Risk

Because Leeno Industrial serves as a primary supplier for a roster of global giants—including Nvidia, TSMC, Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Qualcomm—the strike creates a systemic risk for the broader industry. The semiconductor supply chain is highly interdependent; a failure at a specialized component level can create a ripple effect that delays the delivery of finished products.

This disruption is particularly precarious given the current peak in demand for high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) chips. Any prolonged shutdown of Leeno's production lines could delay the shipment of these high-end processors, potentially stalling infrastructure projects and product launches for the world's leading tech firms.

The Path Forward

As the strike remains indefinite, the industry is watching to see if management and the union can find a compromise on the bonus structure. While the core of the dispute is financial, the stakes have shifted to a matter of global industrial security. Until a resolution is reached, the risk of a bottleneck in the semiconductor quality-control process remains a critical vulnerability for the global electronics market.
