onsemi Pivots to AI Data Centers to Offset Industrial Slump
The semiconductor firm is leveraging a surge in AI power demand to balance cyclical headwinds in automotive and industrial markets.
onsemi has reported an earnings beat fueled by a dramatic surge in AI data center revenue, signaling a strategic shift in the company's growth drivers. The results highlight a critical transition as the firm pivots toward high-growth AI infrastructure to balance volatility in its traditional core markets.
Financial data shows that AI data center revenue more than doubled year-over-year and grew by more than 30% sequentially for Q1 2026. During this period, the company reported revenue of $1.513 billion, representing a 4.7% increase year-over-year. CEO Hassane El-Khoury characterized the first quarter as the business's "inflection point" and the trough of the current cycle, suggesting that the most significant downward pressures may have passed.
Diversifying Beyond Automotive
Historically, onsemi has been heavily reliant on the automotive and industrial sectors, which together account for nearly 80% of its total business. These segments have recently struggled with economic headwinds and inventory adjustments, contributing to overall revenue declines in previous quarters. While the company maintains a strong foothold in electric vehicles—holding over 60% of the Silicon Carbide (SiC) market share for battery electric vehicle (BEV) models in China—the reliance on these cyclical markets has created vulnerability.
The AI Infrastructure Opportunity
This shift toward AI data center power is providing a vital diversification vector. As AI hardware becomes increasingly energy-intensive, the demand for advanced power management and SiC technology is expanding. According to Digitimes, onsemi expects its addressable market per server rack in data centers to grow from $2,500 to $9,500 by 2025. This represents a nearly fourfold increase in potential revenue per unit of infrastructure, positioning the company as a primary provider for the energy-hungry AI boom.
Market Outlook
The transition to AI-driven revenue reduces onsemi's exposure to the boom-and-bust cycles of the industrial sector. By successfully migrating its power leadership into the data center space, the company is expanding its total addressable market while stabilizing its top line. Investors are now watching to see if this momentum can sustain the company's recovery through the remainder of the year as the broader semiconductor market seeks a definitive return to growth. This strategic pivot not only mitigates current risks but establishes a scalable foundation for long-term expansion in the evolving AI landscape.
