BMW Ramps Up i3 Production at Munich Plant to Meet Surging Demand

BMW launched series production of the fully electric i3 at its Munich plant in August 2026. The company is accelerating its manufacturing timeline to keep pace with consumer interest that exceeded internal projections.
Orders for the i3 opened in mid-June 2026, well ahead of the vehicle's official launch. This early window triggered a surge in demand, prompting BMW to implement a steep production ramp-up curve. The i3 is the second vehicle to debut under the "Neue Klasse" (New Class) initiative, following the iX3. Demand for the new electric lineup is widespread; the iX3 has proven so popular that BMW's Debrecen plant in Hungary is currently running double shifts to meet orders.
A Fundamental Shift in Architecture
The i3 is a cornerstone of a broader strategic pivot toward a software-defined, fully electric future. The "Neue Klasse" initiative involves a total remodeling of vehicle architecture and design, which required a comprehensive overhaul of the Munich plant. This transformation included the construction of a new body shop and assembly hall to accommodate the new electric platforms.
Raymond Wittmann, BMW Board member responsible for Production, noted that the i3 brings together the brand's most iconic model identity—the 3 Series—with its most symbolic production site. This synergy is designed to bridge the gap between BMW's internal combustion legacy and its future as an EV leader.
Operational and Market Implications
The transition is already yielding tangible operational gains. BMW reports that the new production processes implemented at the Munich plant have reduced manufacturing costs by 10%. For the industry, this suggests that the shift to a dedicated EV architecture can provide immediate efficiency dividends rather than just long-term theoretical savings.
From a performance standpoint, the BMW i3 50 xDrive is positioning itself as a long-range contender. Provisional WLTP figures indicate a combined energy consumption between 16.1 and 13.4 kWh/100 km, with an estimated range spanning 758 to 912 km. Jochen Goller, BMW Board member for Customer, Brands, and Sales, confirmed that the Neue Klasse models have been very popular since the order books first opened.
The Road to 2027
As BMW continues to scale, the Munich plant is slated to become a dedicated hub for electrification. The company has scheduled the facility to produce exclusively fully electric vehicles starting in 2027.
