China Deploys First Sodium-Ion Powered Electric Mining Truck

Tonly Heavy Industry and HiNa Battery launch a heavy-duty haul truck to challenge lithium-ion dominance in mining.

Chinese industrial firms Tonly Heavy Industry and HiNa Battery have delivered the world's first electric mining truck powered by sodium-ion batteries. The deployment marks a significant shift in heavy-duty electrification, moving beyond traditional lithium-based systems toward a more abundant and sustainable chemistry.

Based on Tonly's 120E series platform, the vehicle was delivered to Sanyou Mining, a unit of the Tangshan Sanyou Group, for operation at limestone mines. The truck is powered by HiNa Battery's "Haixing" (Starfish) battery system, which provides 676 kWh of energy capacity. Technical specifications show the system features a cell energy density exceeding 165 Wh/kg and can reach a full charge from 0% to 100% in 20 to 25 minutes. Durability is a core design focus, with the battery system rated for a lifespan of more than 8,000 cycles, even when utilizing fast-charging modes.

The Shift to Sodium

Sodium-ion batteries are emerging as a strategic alternative to lithium-ion because the widespread availability of sodium reduces raw material costs and supply chain volatility. While lithium remains the standard for consumer electronics, sodium-ion technology is scaling for industrial use. China currently dominates this sector, controlling 92% of global production capacity. This industrial push is extending into other sectors, with FAW Jiefang integrating the technology into heavy-duty trucks and companies like Changan and CATL exploring passenger vehicle applications.

Industrial Implications

This deployment proves that sodium-ion chemistry can scale to the extreme requirements of ultra-class heavy machinery. Mining environments are notoriously harsh, often requiring machinery to operate in extreme temperatures where diesel engines struggle to start and lithium batteries suffer from significant range loss. Sodium-ion batteries offer superior thermal stability and maintain performance in extreme cold, reaching temperatures as low as -40°C. For mining operators, this translates to higher uptime and reduced reliance on expensive climate-controlled charging infrastructure.

Future Outlook

As the Tangshan Sanyou limestone mines integrate the K120E platform, the industry will monitor real-world data on battery degradation over those 8,000 promised cycles. If the Haixing system maintains efficiency under the crushing weight and constant vibration of mining operations, it could trigger a wider transition away from lithium in the heavy-machinery sector. The success of this pilot will likely determine how quickly other global mining hubs adopt sodium-ion alternatives to lower operational costs and carbon footprints.
