Tesla has commenced production of its next-generation Megapack 3 grid battery at a new dedicated Megafactory in Brookshire, Texas. The move signals a significant scaling of Tesla's energy storage ambitions as the company seeks to optimize both hardware density and the speed of field installation.
The new hardware delivers approximately 5 MWh of storage per unit, representing a 28% increase over the 3.9 MWh provided by the previous Megapack 2 XL. This capacity jump is driven by the adoption of a larger 2.8-liter cell format. To improve long-term reliability and streamline assembly, Tesla has reduced thermal-system connection points by 78% compared to the prior generation.
Scaling Production and Deployment
The Brookshire facility reached production in just 16 months and is designed for an annual capacity of 50 GWh dedicated to the Megapack 3. This expansion comes as Tesla's existing plants in Lathrop, California, and Shanghai reach saturation, and as the company faces intensifying competition from global battery leaders such as CATL and BYD.
Beyond the individual units, Tesla is introducing the "Megablock" system. This configuration bundles four Megapack 3 units into a single 20 MWh block featuring integrated transformers and switchgear. Tesla claims this modular approach makes installation approximately 23% faster than current methods and could potentially allow for a 1 GWh deployment in just 20 business days.

This shift toward higher energy density and factory-integrated components addresses the most persistent bottlenecks in grid-scale storage: interconnection and field wiring.
